Online multiplayer games are poised to become a multi-billion dollar industry. As the multiplayer game industry grows, so will demand for network protocols designed specifically for gaming purposes. Network protocols currently in use by the gaming industry are very crude. They usually provide no more than simple stop-and-wait reliable delivery over UDP (User Datagram Protocol). Given the budget constraints of most game design studios, network protocol designs that take into account the long-term, global sustainability of the Internet is not generally considered top priority. With the release of next generation gaming consoles that have built-in ethernet connections, multiplayer gaming traffic will only become more prominent on the Internet. If researchers to not start paying attention to multiplayer gaming protocol design, badly designed protocols that use up large amounts of bandwidth or cause load instability on the Internet could see widespread deployment.The PI proposes to study state synchronization mechanism that takes memory usage characteristics particular to multiplayer games, cheat-proof protocols that support dead reckoning, interest management algorithms that apply occlusion culling techniques from computer graphics, and to collect multiplayer gaming traffic for use in the evaluation of the proposed mechanisms.
