Summary on Grant Application Form
We have invented (and patented) a new cheap and controllable technique to produce 3D interconnected nanostructures using self-assembly of lyotropic liquid crystals and templated electrochemical growth. Having proved the prinicples for metallic and dielectric nanostructured films, our goal is to now produce uniform high-quality semiconductor nano-architectures. Even more importantly, we aim to create functional devices on the 1 nm length scale which are much improved over previous lithographic designs. These have widespread application in semiconductor light emitters, magnetic storage microwave electronics. This will provide a clear route to optimise and elicit new functional properties.Nanostructuring semiconductors and metals allows quantum engineering of electronic wave-functions to enhance optical, magnetic, and electronic properties. However most previous work on nanostructures has concentrated on nanoparticles. The well-defined and continuous three dimensional nanostructures we can produce are a great improvement as they provide a natural scaffold for devices at the smallest scales. These are applicable f a wide range of functionalities, such as fast photodiodes, single-electron transistors, quantum conductors, and quantum wires or quantum dots of util in optoelectronics and quantum information technology.
