The potential of metallocene initiators for carbocationic isobutene/isoprene copolymerisations to act as green , energy-saving alternatives to conventional systems is to be explored. Whereas the commercial process is operated at-95C, electrophilic metallocenes coupled with noncoordinating anions are capable of substantially raising the operating temperatures and eliminating AI and chloride effluent. Polymers with competit high molecular weight can only be produced by precise reaction control. For this reason we propose to (a) quantify the role of trace moisture - wate act as a powerful chain transfer agent; (b) quantify the role of counteranions in cationic polymerisations, based on new anions developed in our lab Control of these parameters will control molecular weight, enabling operating temperatures of -30C and higher. Since the mechanism of initiation I metallocenes is unknown, though clearly different from H* initiation, the polymerisation work will be backed up by mechanistic studies by VT-NMR. Based on these results, new catalysts/initiators will be explored in an effort to broaden the scope of this approach to generate new polymers.
