Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is to launch a major experimental study of the magneto-elastic interaction in epitaxial magnetic/semiconductor heterostructures, an important material system for the development of next generation spin electronic devices. A key aspect of this project is a new collaboration between York and Sheffield with complementary expertise in MBE growth (Dr. Xu in York) and magneto-elastic measurements (Prof. Gibbs in Sheffield), wh will provide the UK magnetics community with a unique chance to establish a world-class facility ultimately with in-situ measurement capacity for the study of magneto-elastic interaction in epitaxial magnetic thin films. There is growing evidence that the magneto-elastic constants, one of the key parameters in controlling the magnetic properties of spin electronic devices and advanced information storage media, in nanoscale magnetic mate are in general different from their bulk values in not only the magnitude and but also possibly the sign. This project will not only determine unambiguously the balance of long range strain effects and short-range chemical effects contributing to the origin of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy observed in Fe/III-V semiconductor heterostructures, an open issue for about one decade, but also and possibly more importantly, study directly fc first time fundamental aspects, such as intrinsic nano scale effects, concerning the magneto-elastic coupling in magnetic nanostructures by using I ferromagnetic metal/III-V semiconductor heterostructures as a unique laboratory with tunable lattice mismatch.
