This proposal seeks to underpin the operation of the Sheffield 2010E EPSRC FEGTEM facility for the next 3 years on a leading research programme. The FEGTEM provides a state-of-the-art array of analytical facilities which can attain nanoscale and even atomic scale resolution for compositional measurements: accordingly, the range of work upon which the instrument will be employed is very wide. At the one end of the range are semiconductor studies of several types of SiGe devices, quantum dot, wire and well characteristics, III-V devices including those based upon GaN and low energy ion implantation phenomena in Si. The work extends to studies of metals and ceramics, including investigations of superhard multilayer coatings, the machining of advanced aerospace materials, thermomechanical processing of microalloyed steels, the characteristics of zirconia resistant to hydrothermal processing and the nature of barium titanate ceramics. The development of a technique which should provide'super resolution' imaging by advanced reference beam TEM is also featured. Information on the FEGTEM facility will be provided to external users and to the wider scientific community through the facility web site which has already been established.To enable the proposed FEGTEM usage to proceed, funds are requested to cover manufacturer's support of the complete system, together with cover for replacementrnstallation of three key items of equipment, namely provision of replacement dry pumps, replacement GIF computer system and the Digiscan system. In addition, funding of a PDRA to carry out newly commissioned experimental work and of an experienced technician for day-to-day maintenance is also requested.
