Pulsed corona discharge (PCD) reactors promote reactions in fluid streams at ambient conditions and are currently being considered, amongst other things, as an alternative for treatment of exhaust streams from mobile and stationary sources. PCD reactors offer several adantages including operation at near-ambient conditions, simplier designs and lower capital and operating costs compared to alternatives, and the ability to simultaneously treat a broad spectrum of noxious substances including dioxins.There is currently little UK-based expertise in this technology. It is proposed to take-up an invitation of a leading world expert in the technology to colead a three year programme of research on the modelling of PCD reactors. The work will focus at a number of length scales seeking to connect them, and it will be coupeled with experimental studies.In Part 1, it is proposed in to develop a DSMC model and use it to: (1) explore the fundamentals of reactive streamers, (2) develop it as a method for determining intra-streamer kinetic and transport parameters, and (3) develop its application to engineering model validation. The outputs from Part 1 will be used in Part 2 where preliminary multiscale multidimensional engineering modeling approaches will be developed and tested.
