Summary on Grant Application Form
Conjugated dendrimers are a new class of materials for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) which combine the advantages of molecular and polymeric materials. In particular they have the well-defined structure of molecular materials, but with the key advantage of solution processibilily normally associated with polymers. We have demonstrated very efficient OLEDs based on dendrimers illustrating their potential for flat panel displays. Dendrimers consist of a core, dendrons, and surface groups. The choice of each of these components then gives enormous flexibility in controlling their properties so that, for example, electronic and processing properties can be optimised independently. The interactions between molecules have a profound effect on the electronic and optical properties of organic materials. We will synthesise and study new dendrimers in which the shape and structure of the molecules gives remarkable control over the intermolecular interactions and study the impact on the electronic, optical, and device properties.
