This proposal requests funding for a high-speed Constant-Tension Yarn Transport instrument to support two PhD programmes in machine vision for high-speed measurement and monitoring of yam properties and an intelligent laser targetting system. The yarn transport instrument is essential for the PhD projects and will be used to simulate the actual yarn and lace production speeds in a controlled laboratory environment.Even the most advanced instruments used for assessing yarn properties do not take full advantage of digital image processing offered by CCD cameras. Therefore, there is a great need to understand the imaging requirements of yams theoretically and practically, as well as to develop algorithms and methods which assist yam image capturing and analysis at high yarn production speeds. A recent PhD research programme has begun to tackle these problems.Previous Loughborough research demonstrated that lace can be cut by using a vision system and laser cutting. However this causes thermal demage to the cut edge of the polymeric yarn. Individual lace threads can be targeted using machine vision and cut with a pulsed laser. A current PhD research programme envisages that this method will lead to a more accurate cut edge and reduced thermal damage to the materials.
