Summary on Grant Application Form
We aim to design a novel mid-infrared ring laser based on a whispering gallery (WG) mode created by total internal reflection inside the perimeter of a mesa diode structure. The research will consist of analytical models as well as computer simulations and will include the study of both light propagation in the wave-guide and carrier dynamics in the active layer. We shall calculate the mode structure in the semiconductor WG ring wave-guide, considering the limiting cases of very small (- X) and large rings, the effects of diffraction losses in respect of ring inhomogeneities, as well as light extraction for creation/optimisation of the output mirror. Laser dynamics of the ring wave-guide will be studied to determine the conditions required to achieve mode-locked operation. The current propagation through the active region, either type I or type II heterointerfaces and the interaction with the optical guided mode will also be studied.
