Describe the proposed research in about 200 words.The availability of a reliable supply of water is one of the most important determinants of our health. Historically improvements in our health have been related to improvements in our water supply system from source to tap. The quality of water we receive in the UK today (99.82% of 2.8 million samples met the standards) is achieved through improvements in source protection, water treatment, operation and maintenance, quality monitoring and training and education. The UK water industry provides 18,000 million litres of water every day to 58 million people and to achieve this spends around 3.Obn every year on improving the water supply and sewerage services.An informal meeting between six of the proposed partners took place at Cranfield in November 2001. This meeting was organised to discuss (a) if there was a need for a joint industry - academia network on water treatment and supply and (b) what the objectives of such a network be The proposed network will be treatment focussed but specifically look at a source to tap approach to process selection, optimisation and management.
