SummaryDescribe the proposed research in about 200 words.Greater light transmission, by factors of up to 1000, through arrays of sub-wavelength holes has been observed than single aperture theory predicts. It is proposed to investigate this extraordinary behaviour theoretically, by solving the full Maxwell's equations for the three dimensional, multi-wavelength problem domain. This is only now possible, as recent advances in the mathematical methods used for radio-frequency electromagnetic computation, driven by military `stealth' requirements, have produced a vast step increase in computational capability. These techniques will be extended to this optical area. The primary objective is to investigate the physics of the phenomenon; to conduct parameter surveys, to try to gain generic understanding of the dependence of the enhanced transmission on the parameters of the problem. A delay in transmission is observed, consistent with the time required to establish some resonant interaction between members of the array of holes. A time domain solution will be used, the allow the evolution of the fields to be observed, and to permit this delay to be investigated directly.
