Summary on Grant Application Form
SummaryDescribe the proposed research in about 200 words.we request funding for the purchase of a CCD-equipped diffractometer which will provide vital support for 16 research programmes in the Department of Chemistry at Heriot-Watt University covering: heteroborane chemistry, transition metal macrocyctic chemistry, organometallic chemistry (catalytic and fundamental structure/reactivity work), studies in crystal engineering and molecular recognition (heteroboranes, electrochemical and redox controlled interactions, hydrogen bonding), medicinally-related organic chemistry (PNAs, NO synthase, aza-sugars, peroxides and lactones), polydiacetylene -chemistry and related biosensors, and fundamental work on low-dimensional solids. All these programmes will benefit greatly from rapid structural analyses. Many of our synthetic programmes tend to produce only small, weakly diffracting crystals and study with a CCD-equipped diffractometer is the only realistic option in such cases.we seek funds to purchase only the hardware and consumables necessary for these studies. Heriot-Watt University is funding the post of the -experimental officer (co-investigator 3) responsible for operating the diffractometer, and will provide any technical support necessary to ensure the successful completion of the project.
