Summary on Grant Application Form
Laboratory-and-Field based, laser Raman spectroscopy will be combined for the first time using a miniaturised instrumental prototype designed for Martian exploration to stiudy the micro-spatial distribution of protective biomolecules in stress-tolerant organisms. Their survival strategies and production of key biomarkers will be determined to identify biomolecules produced to combat low temperatures, extreme desiccation and exposure to high levels of UV-radiation. Materials will be collected from high Antarctic latitudes within the enhanced UVB in the ozone hole. It is of fundamental importance to be able to compare terrestrial data with that expected from organisms which have evolved on terrestrial planets (including Mars); the inclusion of a Raman spectrometer as part of a Mars exploration robotic lander in 2005 or beyond requires the evaluation of miniaturised instrumentation for the recognition of extinct or extant life through key biomolecular spectral markers. This project is designed to bring together the scientific expertise of UK and US teams to realise this objective.
