Summary on Grant Application Form
Within this project we plan to carry out theoretical and experimental studies of novel types of high-power diode lasers that incorporate curved-grating structures that are designed to provide enhanced spatial and spectral control. Our previous results have demonstrated the following.(). Appropiate technology has been developed for reliable fabrication of second- and third- order curved-groove gratings, (i) c-DBR devices with a side-mode suppresion ratio over 30dB have been fabricated successfully and (ii) far-field and near-field studies have shown a lateral beam focusing effect outside the front facet, as predicted in our theoretical considerations. In addition to fully characterising and optimising the lasers in the 850 and 980nm spectral regions (ie AIGaAs, InGaAs material systems) we intend to evaluate the applicability of these novel laser systems in the optical pumping of laser gain media and in frequency-up/down-conversion in quasi-phase-matched nonlinear optical crystals such as periodically-polled lithium nlobate and KTP. With these PPLN and PPKTP crystals it will be feasible to demonstrate significant frequency doubling, eg, such that a bkWUV compact source can be constructed.
