Summary on Grant Application Form
The centre proposes an ambitious interdisciplinary programme that build upion research and expertise developed over the last five years by the EPSRC's IMI/RAEng Chair in Innovative Manufacturing - Construction. The Centre will draw upon engineering, management and social sciences in order to tacke real world empirical problems focusing on the development of new technology in the production and use of the uilt environment. It addresses competitiveness and quality of life issues, recognising that problems faced by practicioners and policymakers are inter-related and can best be investigated through a collaborative approach. The proposed work is located within the field of engineering, design and innovation management associated with long-lived complex capital assets and infrastructures. As yet, the development, acquisition and deployment of technology in project-based organisations has not been studied in enough detail to create a sufficient body of knowledge. The Centre's staff have close links with industry, user organisations and research networks worldwide. Our activities will draw on and contribute to this wealth of experience, leveraging additional funding from other agencies. The centre will be located in a new JIF-supported research laboratory, The Freeman Centre, designed specifically to encourage creativity, innovation and problem-solving.
