Summary on Grant Application Form
The expertise and equipment available in the Gordon Laboratory relate primarily to the load-bearing characteristics of materials. While there is much ongoing work on the development of various novel structural materials, effort is also being directed into several areas of intensive interdisciplinary activity in which our expertise is pivotal. Examples include the mechanics of biomedical implants, mechanical compensation for thermal expansion in optical devices, and structure-property relationships in metallic foams - particularly relating to transport phenomena such as heat transfer. Several initiatives concern mechanical characteristics of functional devices. It is also planned that current thermal barrier coating research will be extended and a fundamental study is being initiated into the Poisson's ratio characteristics of a range of anisotropic materials. There will also be further work building on recent advances in the Laboratory concerning lightweight sandwich structures such as the ultra-light hybrid steel sheet being developed in collaboration with Volvo, Corus, TWI et al. Much of the work is being carried out in collaboration with UK industry.
