With increasing demands for higher data rates in optical communication systems, which form the backbones of practically any telephone, TV or data network worldwide, scalar models start to become inaccurate. The main reason is the neglection of the two states of polarization, the birefringence and the random rotation of the polarization axes in every optical fibre. Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is created through the two different group velocities (birefringence) in the two principal states of polarization together with the random rotation of their orientation, which causes a significant and undesired broadening of the pulses.As data rates per channel increase beyond 40 Gbit/s and pulse widths decrease to a few pico seconds, the resulting PMD begins to significantly influence the transmission properties and is expected to evolve into the main limiting factor for very high data rates. Thus extensive research of the impact of PMD on the transmission performance is proposed. To move from the currently used scalar models to new vector models, the non-linear Schrodinger equation needs to be rewritten as a set of two coupled non-linear Schrodinger equations. The exact form of the coupling term and the details of the numerical implementation of the solution of these coupled equations including the polarization rotation form the mathematical core of the proposed research.
