One of the most striking phenomena of the coordination chemistry of Au(I) is its tendency to establish weak Au---Au contacts (aurophilic contacts) in the solid state, somewhat similar to hydrogen bonds, which strongly influences the structure and properties of gold([) complexes. For example, aurophilicity is responsible for strong luminescence in compounds with applications as photochemical switches or sensors, it can be used as a controlling force in crystal engineering, and may have a role in the function of gold anti-arthritis drugs and catalysts. In spite of the extensive experimental evidence and theoretical studies, the nature of the interaction is still a matter of controversy and many questions still remain. For example, there is virtually no information about aurophilicity in solution, and little is known about its relation to the properties of gold compounds, in particular to their luminescence. To clarify this, systematic correlated structure-luminescence studies of families of complexes with tunable metal---metal contacts, both in the solid state and in solution are proposed. For the first time, EXAFS will be applied to obtain Au---Au distances in dissolved gold complexes.
