This research will build on existing research carried out in the Ford Environmental Test Chamber (Dunton, UK), UK field tests and some computer modelling in Cambridge. It will take 30 insulated shelter liners to the field in an ICRC camp in Afghanistan (Shaishia camp, Jalalabad) and to a UNHCR camp in Ingushetia. It will carry out the tests on four separate tent designs. The testing will monitor fuel consumption, humidity, thermal environment within the shelters. It will obtain occupant feedback from both the insulated tents and in the non-insulated tents. This information will be gathered both through observation and through questionnaires.Following the initial set of results from the field, the ideal composition of a liner will be identified including the ideal properties for different surfaces of the tent liner. Results from Laboratory tests will be compared with results from field tests. Improved computer models will be obtained.A repeat visit to the field on year after the initial visits will investigate the performance and occupant feedback of the liners after one year of use and will assess the improved liners.
