Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal is a part of a project, in collaboration with McClintock (Lancaster) and Vinen (Birmingham), aimed at studies of the quantum turbulence in superfluid 4He at mK temperatures, i.e. when the normal component is virtually absent.W e propose to measure the absolute value of cross-section of ion capture by quantized vortex lines in superfluid 4He at temperatures well below 100mK. This information is yet unavailable and needed badly for quantitative interpretation of the experiments on grid turbulence at Lancaster.A homogeneous array of vortex lines of variable density will be created in the rotating cryostat, and the charge, accumulated on the vortices after the exposure to the transverse current of negative ions, will be measured. The dynamics of vortex array creation and annihilation will be probed with the same technique. An attempt to create turbulence in superfluid 4He (and to monitor its development with the ion trapping technique) with a grid stretched across an annular channel in the rotating cryostat will also be made.
