Summary on Grant Application Form
A modulated DSC designed to fit inside an entirely novel design of single-mode, microwave-conventional hybrid heating chamber will be designed and investigated. The new instrument will provide an entirelt new approach to analysing the thermal properties of materials with and without the influence of microwaves under otherwise identical conditions. The in-situ measruements will allow the effect of microwaves on phase transition phenomena to be unambigiuosly resolved and the underlying mechanisims elucidated. The design will men that it will be the first time true calorimetry, i.e. heat flow measurement, AND thermal diffusivity measurement has been possible in the same calorimeter. This will open up a new field in thermal analysis in its own right. In the proposal three representative examples, Agl, BaTiO3 and glass transitions, will be investigated to determine the effect of microwaves on their phase transition behaviour.
