Summary on Grant Application Form
Magnetically targeted drug delivery is a method for targeting drugs or genes to specific sites in the body by using nanoscale magnetic particles as drug carriers and a magnetic field to attract these carriers to the target site. A number of promising experimental studies have been conducted to investigate this technique including animal studies and clinical trials. The proposed research aims to develop and analyse mathematical models of this process. It will start by formulating models to describe magnetic particle motion, for a wide range of particle sizes, in blood vessels ranging from capillaries to arteries. The results of these models will be compared with in vitro experimental work currently being carried out in Keele and will then be used to formulate a model for magnetic particle transport in a network of vessels. Finally the transport of the drug/magnetic particle across the endothelial wall into the intercellular tissue space will be considered.
