Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal targets for the first time optical integrated circuits in a glass based on gallium lanthanum sulphide. This material offers high nonlinearity and photosensitivity along with an ability to host high dopant levels. This project will develop this multi-functional material and exploit the outstanding optical properties. Recently, we wrote channel waveguides into samples of this bulk glass through direct W writing. Optical characterization revealed well-formed single mode channels with losses of 0.240.10 dB/cm at 1.3 um. The project will build on this result, exploring new chalcogenide waveguide deposition methods, more efficient channel writing and thereby provide proof of principle for devices integrating lasers, gratings and nonlinear switches on a single substrate.
