Summary on Grant Application Form
It has recently been shown that trace levels of water can markedly affect the outcome of oxygen isotopic exchange experiments f pure ionic conductors such as YSZ. The oxygen exchange rate can be several orders of magnitude larger in the presence of water This has two important consequences (i) the intrinsic surface exchange rate of oxygen with these materials is not known, and cc be very small, especially at low temperatures and (ii) water may have a large beneficial effect on the performance of SOFC's an( related devices, particularly in the cathode component. It is therefore urgent to understand and quantify this effect in a series of controlled isotope exchange experiments with labelled oxygen and water.
