Summary on Grant Application Form
Until recently, the study of infinite groups and the classical topic of solving polynomial equations seemed to be independent fields of mathematical research. The subjects are tied together in the theory of zeta functions of groups. In various areas of mathematics - most prominently in number theory and algebraic geometry - zeta functions have proved to be powerful tools. However, zeta functions of groups are still a relatively young area of research. Properties of zeta functions show remarkable symmetries. Their meaning in the group, however, remains mysterious. In my research I am trying to bridge this gap by developing the theoretical framework of a coordinate independent calculus for zeta functions of groups to both enhance explicit computations and interpret the symmetries they reveal.Oxford is the ideal research environment for this project. With Marcus du Sautoy and Dan Segal, two of the leading experts in the field are working in Oxford.
