Summary on Grant Application Form
The elegant architecture of the liver is essential to the functioning of its cells. We propose that the restoration of tissue architecture is a vital step in the successful engineering of liver tissue in the laboratory. We will generate tissue regeneration templates using microfabrication facilities at RAL. These templates will guide cell behaviour during liver engineering at the University of Nottingham. Underpinning our approach will be mathematical modelling of the relationship between microstructure and cell organisation at the University of Leeds. This collaborative team will be able to predict, manufacture and employ microstructures to generate liver tissue that will act as an alternative to animal use in early stage metabolism/toxicology studies by the pharmaceutical industry.
