Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this deeply interdisciplinary project is to develop methods for the inference of strategic states in bird navigation and to exploit these models for the construction of novel machine learning paradigms. We aim to investigate not only the existence and temporal inter-relationships of navigation states of single birds, but also the relationship and the effects on the navigation strategies of more than one bird co-navigating. This will enable us to build realistic machine models for such behaviour and investigate in detail the efficacy of navigational strategies. It remains unknown whether there is additional complexity (in terms of strategy states) in the navigational behaviour of groups of birds compared to a single individual and whether, if these states exist, they are co-operative or inhibitatory. Furthermore, we intend to obtain results for birds with differing navigational experience. We expect results from such experiments to shed light on the method by which information is exchangedbetween experienced and inexperienced individuals. We intend to utilise this information to enable machines, which have learned a task, to 'train' others.
