Summary on Grant Application Form
The scope of multidimensional systems theory has grown larger since the introduction of the behavioural approach to systems, and now covers general systems described by partial differential equations or multidimensional difference equations. It therefore has applications in numerous areas of engineering, physics, and mathematics. However, the theory requires considerable further development, even at a fundamental level. In this proposal we aim to tackle two related problems of great practical importance: identification of nD systems, and model approximation of nD systems. For these purposes we intend to develop a metric on the set of nD behaviours based on 1 D behavioural techniques and concepts such as the gap metric. We will also apply previous work of the proposers describing the complexity of an nD system. These tools will be key to extending the current very limited results on these problems. We intend to provide identification and approximation results for linear nD systems in general form, i.e. described by linear partial differential/ difference equations. We also aim to describe the deficiency of an approximate model of a system. We will apply our results to the distinct class of 2D systems known as linear repetitive processes, and to their major applications area, iterative learning control.
