A major requirement for the fabrication of efficacious molecular-scale electronic devices is an optical switch that directs charge along a predetermined. circuit. It is our contention that the direction of electron transfer could be controlled by attaching different subunits to opposite sides of a central zinc(II) porphyrin. Excitation into the lowest-energy Q -band promotes electron transfer to an adjacent electron acceptor. However, illumination into the higher-energy B-band should favour energy transfer to a closely bound metal complex that subsequently transfers an electron to a different acceptor. Variations on this theme become possible by judicious selection of the appendages.
