Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this proposal is to develop micron-scale fluorescence sensors suitable for DNA quantification and analysis. By using vertical-cavity semiconductor optoelectronics the excitation, detection and filtering of the fluorescence can be integrated onto a single chip. These optical 'Bio-Chips' would revolutionise genomic and proteomic analysis by providing low cast sensors suitable for widespread use at 'point-of-contact'. The fluorescent dye samples will be placed directly on top of the optoelectronic device. Dye excitation will be achieved using a resonant-cavity LED operating at a wavelength tuned to the absorption peak of the dye. Intra-cavity, absorbing epitaxial layers will be placed in the LED to provide detection of the fluorescence. By placing the absorber at a node in the internal electromagnetic field the absorption and excitation functions will be isolated and there will be no reduction in the LED power. The multiple layer Bragg reflectors of the device will be designed to filter out stray excitation light reflected from the dye.
