Summary on Grant Application Form
Broue's abelian defect group conjecture is one of the most important and intriguing open problems in the representation theory of finite groups. In the course of finding character-theoretic evidence for this conjecture, Rouquier identified some blocks of the symmetric groups which he believed should have special properties. In the last two years these Rouquier blocks have played a starring role in exciting progress in a variety of areas in representation theory.: Broue's conjecture, decomposition numbers for the symmetric groups, and canonical bases for quantum groups. The purpose of the proposed project is to complete a proof of Broue's conjecture for the symmetric groups via Rouquier blocks with abelian defect group and to give a local description of Rouquier blocks with nonabelian defect group. We expect to gain insight into fundamental questions: the calculation of decomposition numbers for the symmetric groups and the formulation of a generalisation of Broue's conjecture for arbitary blocks of finite groups.
