Summary on Grant Application Form
Exceptional sets in metric Diophantine approximation on manifolds will be investigated. For those arising from extremality, it is likely that the Hausdorff dimension depends only on the error function and the topological dimension of the manifold. For those associated with simultaneous Diophantine approximation, the Hausdorff dimension depends on the algebraic or arithmetic structure of the manifold as well, reflecting the more delicate character of the approximation. Elucidating the intriguing question of how these aspects affect the Hausdorff dimension will be pursued.
