Professor Braun will visit the Faculty of Mathematical Studies, University of Southampton for a total of 16 weeks. During his time here, he will take part in two major interactions. First, he will continue his already productive work with Professor A. Wheeler on phase field methods. In particular, work will be carried out on the xi-tensor formulation of the phase field equations. Professor Wheeler's theoretical expertise and Professor Braun's numerical skills will be combined to produce a numerical solution to the phase-field problem with surface anisotropy in two dimensions. Consideration will also be given to the formulation of the problem in three dimensions. Second, Professor Braun will continue his interaction with members of the Mathematics Faculty (and in particular Professors Fitt and Please) in the area of industrial applied mathematics. Specifically, two industrial problems that involve thinlayer asymptotics will be considered, namely the flow of non-Newtonian fluids in heat exchangers and the drawing of optical fibres. Both asymptotic and numerical methods will be employed to consider paradigm problems arising from the modelling of these industrial processes. During his period here, Professor Braun will also visit Dr. S. Wilson at the University of Strathclyde for a week to further pursue his interest in draining thin film flows. He will further visit the University of Nottingham for one week to continue collaboration with his ex-PHD student Dr. Naire, and to interact with Professor O. Jensen and Professor J. King. Finally, he will attend both the BAMC (Warwick) and the 2002 European Study Group with Industry (Lancaster).
