Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to apply a pulsed non-contact magnetic direct generation technique to excite acoustic waves in plastic substrates in order to use them as inexpensive biological sensing elements for proteins, oligonucleotides and whole cells. The programme envisages selection of an appropriate rigid, low loss plastic substrate, construction of a high power pulsed acoustic wave generation/detection system, the design of a spiral coil of low electrical resistance, and monitoring the influence of biological events on the reflection coefficient of the acoustic wave.
