Third and future generation mobile systems are expected to support multimedia services. We can only design efficient resource allocation algorithms if we have a very good understanding of the traffic produced by these applications. Until now researchers have concentrated on producing traffic models for single media applications (e.g. voice, video and data). However, little work has been done to model multimedia applications that consist of an integration of two or more of these media types. The problem is that it is difficult to predict future applications. Instead of building models for specific multimedia applications (which might never emerge) it is more effective to build a generalized or'benchmark' traffic model that captures the salient characteristics of multimedia traffic. The main goal of this project is to develop a methodology for network performance evaluation that is based on the use of such a benchmark traffic model. In the first phase of the project we will design and implement a benchmark traffic modelling framework. Based on that model we will develop our methodology for the performance evaluation of scheduling algorithms used on the uplink and downlink of a packet based CDMA system. In the last phase of the research we will use our methodology to design a new scheduling algorithm for the downlink of the CDMA system.
