Summary on Grant Application Form
This application seeks support for a Visiting Fellow, Dr P Dastoor. The aim is to carry out research related directly to future application of atom microscopy and gain new insights into the atom-surface interaction process. The wave properties of atomic beams mean that it is possible, in principle to build a microscope using helium atoms. However, the big question is what controls the contrast that you will see with such a microscope? This project aims to investigate one particular contrast mechanism associated with interference effects that occur when helium atoms scatter from stepped surface: The immediate benefit of this research will be improved techniques for studying thin film growth. Longer term, this project provides an opportunity to contribute to international efforts to develop a unique instrument with unprecedented resolution - the atom beam microscope.
