Residue carbon in ash has important consequences both for land fill and for its sale for incorporation into concrete. Also, high carbon is an indicator of poor combustion performance. This project is to develop a technique to map the carbon content of fly ash formed from coal ins laboratory bumier. The method of measurement employs light scattering. and has previously been proved for scattering by individual particles. However, in more practical situations many particles Udll be observed at once. Therefore, we will be concerned to calibrate the technique for scattering by clouds of particies, and then demonstrate that the carbon content can be mapped by imaging the scattered light from a laser sheet onto a CCD camera. The ultimate aim is to provide data on rates of burnout and ash production.
