Radio frequency micro-electromechanical systems (RFMEMS) are now positioned to become ubiquitous in the low microwave frequency range, especially in mobile communications. However, the design flexibility and potential for low cost and small form-factor devices means that RFMEMS techniques can be much more widely applied. Building reliable, low cost, devices for use at microwave frequencies has always been difficult and expensive. The problems are only harder and more costly to solve at sub-millimetre wave (30 - 300 GHz) and the less well-defined teraHertz (300 GHz ~10 THz) frequencies. Recent work by the applicant and his colleagues in New Zealand has demonstrated that silicon micromachined structures with appropriate mechanical actuation can be designed to have tuneable characteristics. So far we have invented, designed, modelled, built and tested a variable artificial dielectric retarder (VADR) for use at 100 GHz using this technology. More recently, we have invented a tuneable band-pass filter using photonic bandgap technology. The application is in frequency selection and frequency division multiplexing. These components are essential to modern RF telecommunications and imaging systems, and because of wavelength scaling, the concepts apply to all wavelengths.
