SummaryDescribe the proposed research in about 200 words.The manufacturing research group at the University of Liverpool seeks to attain excellence in manufacturing process and technology research through the establishement of an Innovative Manufacturing Technology Research Centre (IMTRC). The group presently supports UK manufacturing industry through the provision of high quality innovative manufacturing research output that makes a significant contribution to the global competitiveness of UK manufacturing industry. This is achieved by engaging with industry in the generation and realisation of a range of innovative research programmes. The group is focused on research that covers leading edge manufacturing processes including rapid manufacturing, micromanufacturing, biomanufacturing and laser material processing. An overriding feature of the research group is our capability to develop manufacturing process technologies with a broad interdisciplinary approach. The problems that we have chosen to study within the proposed IMTRC are amongst those that have been identified as the most crucial for the future well-being of UK manufacturing enterprises namely: flexible and re-configurable production technologies; technology pathways to mass customisation; advanced materials; microengineering and nanoscale manufacturing; medical device technologies. All research programmes carried out within the IMTRC will be supported by leading edge national and international companies through close collaborative partnerships.
