Summary on Grant Application Form
We will develop a methodology, based on both theory and computation, for understanding the role of resonances in strongly nonlinear, far from integrable, high dimensional dynamical systems. We will develop, and apply, the methods to a study of the intramolecular vibrational dynamics of the rotationless carbonyl sulfide (OCS) molecule. It is a system that has a complicated potential energy surface that does not lend itself to simplification, and it has 3 degrees-of-freedom which means that conventional thinking about tori as barriers in phase space does not apply. It is also an important molecule in a number of different settings, the environment being one such setting. It is one of the 2 most important sulphur-containing compounds that produce the formation of stratospheric particles, which are the main source of cloud condensation nuclei in the troposphere remote from land. Our methodology will rely heavily on the rapid developments in time-frequency analysis for data over the past 10 years. Wavelet analysis is a natural alternative for performing frequency analysis oftrajectories that possess time varying frequencies.
