This research proposal will encompass the synthesis, structural characterisation, processing and properties of nanoporous polymer networks based on phthalocyanine (Pc) subunits. These materials are thermally and chemically stable and allow access to the metal-ion contained in the phthalocyanine for catalytic processes. The work will build on the successful approach of using rigid linking groups composed of fused ring systems that enforce separation of the large Pc macrocycles and ensure that the material cannot fill space efficiently. Thus, an interpenetrating network of voids is formed.A specific aim will be the establishment of a fundamental relationship between the structure of the spirocyclic linking group between phthalocyanines and the surface area of the network. Larger linking groups based on spiropolymeric oligomers will be prepared with the aim of producing materials with larger pore sizes. In addition the synthesis of microporous networks from preformed phthalocyanines will be attempted. The surface area of the networks will be optimised based upon the results of these studies. Methods to control the morphology of the network particles (e.g. spherical) will be explored in order to improve their utility for a number of applications. Finally, these materials will be assessed as heterogeneous catalysts for, adsorbants and as chromatographic substrates.
