Recent developments in microelectronics technology have meant that artificial retina chips to repair certain types of blindness have become a realistic prospect. Animal retinas vary from the very simple to the complex: for example, salamander retinas act like simple photodiodes, whereas human retinas are slices of brain tissue that perform certain image processing tasks. Current retina chips that are on trial are arrays of photodiodes. This proposal aims to combine in-vivo measurements of retinal activity with state of the art developments in pixel detector technology in the manufacture o prototype retinal implants that contain some element of 'smart' neural encoding. A microelectrode array on a flexible substrate that can be inserted in one eye of an anaesthetised animal will be made. This will allow a retina chip to be connected and in-vivo measurements of retinal activity in a select region of the retina to be made with and without the retina chip. The programming of the retina chip will be optimised to determine to what degree retinal encoding can be reproduced in silicon. Chip power and control/diagnostic lines will be hard-wired. The study will lay the baseline technology fi further developments of autonomous smart retinal implants (self-powered, without external wiring).
