SummaryDescribe the proposed research in about 200 words.This project proposes the development of a planning domain description language, capable of expressing domains with continuous quantities, together with the provision of tools and environments for supporting a planner-developer in its effective use. The investigators have begun the development of such a language, PDDL+, comprising a very powerful and flexible approach to the modelling of time and numeric quantities. The objective of this work is to develop PDDL+ into a standard language that will facilitate the scientific development of temporal planning.The investigators are co-chairing the 2002 international planning competition which will emphasise planning in temporal domains using a subset of PDDL+. This provides the opportunity to significantly influence the way planning research develops, into the future, in the international feld. With this opportunity comes the responsibility to ensure that the challenges posed by the competition are beneficial to the development of planning research and that as many members of the community as possible are encouraged to pursue these challenges both at the competition itself and in its aftermath. This project will help to focus the work of the community on meeting the many challenges of planning in temporal domains.
