Summary on Grant Application Form
The research program includes the following components:a) Manufacturing of a single gallium nanoparticle on the tip of a tapered fibre using novel light assisted deposition process; b) the study of nonlinear optics of the nanoparticle at a SNOM probe tip in a cw and time resolved sub-picosecond pump-probe experiments; c) the study of photoconductivity and the electro-optic effect in a single nanoparticle at a SNOM probe tip; d) the development of the theory of nonlinear optical and electro-optical response of a single nanoparticle. This project will be unique in several respects. Firstly, it will be the first research project in which a range of photonic properties, including all-optical switching, photoconductivity and the electro-optic effect, are studied using a single nanoparticle. Secondly, we expect to see a strong effect with various potential applications. Finally, this will be very cost-effective research as it will exploit existing facilities, and will rely on a very simple (in comparison to the complexity of the problem) experimental set-up.
