Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research seeks to use arrays of hydrogen bonding functionality to make a range of supramolecular devices.First focus of the research is to discover and test new artificial hosts for specific anions, more specifically to prepare synthetically accessible hosts which could bind halide anions and possibly signal their presence by fluorescence quenching. Second, it seeks to produce a series of cyclotrimeric hosts preorganized for planar oxoanions such as nitrate and carbonate, and to bind them with high specificity. Finally it outlines research to test the feasibility and synthetic utility of the concept of using defined supramolecular complexes as scaffolding to direct the regiochemical outcome of photochemical reactions.
