Synchrotron radiation often stimulates fluoroescence in the materials under study and analysis of this emission can give valuable insight into the electronic properties and processes of the materials concerned. In wide band-gap solids, the emission is often both very weak, and broad-band in nature. The ability to analyse the signals at variable temperatures is essential, in order to understand the charge-trapping competition of mid-gap defects, and to determine the effects of luminescence temperature-quenching.The proposal is to develop a self-contained End-Station to allow for high-efficiency detection of broad-band fluoroescence, in the energy range 1.2-6eV (200-1000nm) and temperature range 9-500K. The station will be fully mobile, and deployable on most of the beamlines at Daresbury, covering the excitation range 5eV to 70keV. Acceptance of this proposal will lead to a number of new applications to use the facility, and the grant-proposers will be pro-active in ensuring this occurs. To demonstrate the capabilities of the system, a limited amount of beam-time here will be used to determine: (a) the band-gaps of feldspar; these are important materials, never previously studied (b) the radioluminescence time-response of Al2O3 over a wide excitation energy range (5 eV to 10keV): this information has important uses in medical dosimetry measurement.
