Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to set up a world-class consortium to undertake a programme to investigate laser-plasma based accelerator technology and apply it to developing compact, tuneable, coherent, sources of ultra-short pulse coherent electromagnetic radiation. The Basic Technology Research Programme would provide the opportunity to combine these areas and investigate compact ultra short pulse accelerators and coherent free-electron laser sources to establish the feasibility of developing a future compact x-ray freeelectron laser based on laser-plasma accelerator technology. If this ultimate goal is realised it would greatly enhance the UK's capacity and capability in the application of femtosecond imaging (with both electrons and x-rays), and two-colour and two-type (electron-photon) pump-probe time resolved studies.
