SummaryDescribe the proposed research in about 200 words.The proposed programme aims to obtain a detailed quantitative understanding of the electrospray process so that this technology may be applied to a variety of processes. One such process we wish to evaluate is the potential for building biologically active structures, with the placement of molecules with sub micron precision, so that molecules may be located at specific sites on a substrate. This technology may be used to influence cellular behaviour for tissue engineering or in the development of nano-arrays. To achieve this we need to identify the constraints on the surface deposition of appropriate functional biomolecules. We will also address the more general issue of volumetric production of nano particles and molecules using electrospray technology, which at present is inhibited by the degradation and performance uncertainty of capillary systems currently employed in nano spray. As part of this we will examine the ability to achieve uniformity of sprayed nano particles from micro-fabricated arrays of nozzles.
