We request funding to launch an ambitious, internationally unique programme on vortex physics in superconductors. The core of the programme is a combination of a high-resolution magnetic decoration technique that will be set up at Manchester and application of-the technique to a novel system, never studied by a visualization method before: vortex matter confined in a small volume. The Bitter decoration is a rather unique method that allows visualization of vortices and already helped to discover and elucidate a great variety of superconducting phenomena. On the other hand, research in the physics of confined vortex matter is a new and very active area which continues to bring surprises and attracts more and more researchers. The project would greatly facilitate further developments in this area and give the applicants, currently leaders in this research, a strong competitive edge due to the novel experimental approach. Our research will be concentrated on visualization of a variety of vortex phases in mesoscopic samples made from conventional, high-temperature and new superconductors. This is needed for better understanding of the interplay between vortex-vortex, vortex-boundary and vortex-crystal interactions and the physics of interacting few-body systems in general. It is hoped that the research will uncover further surprises in this new area and the visualization of vortex structures will help to resolve current uncertainties, providing direct proof and clear illustrations for many aspects of the physics of superconductivity. The decoration setup will also be made available to other UK groups through collaborations.
