Funds are sought to support an international workshop whose pimary purpose will be the strengthening of the UK research base in biologically-inspired robotics, and the related areas of cybernetics, artificial life, adaptive behaviour, and intelligent systems engineering, also including aspects of theoretical biology. To this end, strenuous efforts will be made to involve research students working in relevant fields. The workshop will be structured around keynote presentations from world-class practitioners who have the status to attract participants from the UK and further afield as well as to inform and educate the audience about current and likely future directions.Such an event is extremely timely. Not only does it mesh with the recently-announced AIBACS Programme, the year 2002 is also the 25th anniversary of the death of W Grey Walter, whose pioneering work at the Burnden Neurological Institute in Bristol in the 1950's laid the foundations for the subject we now recognise as biologically-inspired robotics. The biological aspect plays a dual role. Adaptive robots functioning in the real world can provide physical models of biology, and can also provide a radical alternative to conventional methods of designing intelligent engineering systems. The academic research aspects of the topic will, of course, loom large, but we will not forget the potentioal for practical, industrial applications.
